"The SE360 Preview of WWE Elimination Chamber"

Dr. Chad Matthews: My historically least favorite PPV of the year is coming up on Sunday. It's been renamed Elimination Chamber after many years of being called No Way Out. I have never liked the fact that they put a PPV in between the Rumble and Mania because, most of all, I think it's an unnecessary injury risk. The superstars work harder during PPV matches, pushing the envelope to give the fans their money's worth. And then in recent years they upped the ante and featured 12 of their top superstars in Elimination Chamber matches, further increasing the unnecessary risk. It was a success from a business perspective, though, so I digress. They have managed to make it a fairly unpredictable show, what with the return of the Big Show in 2008 and the surprise title changes last year. I think they've managed to be unpredictable with the show this year...at least to some extent...because I am, as of yet, unclear about who will win the Chamber matches and walk away with the titles. I'll get to that later on in Parting Shots, so allow me to break down the matches that have been booked...

World Heavyweight Championship Elimination Chamber: The Undertaker (c) vs. Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio vs. John Morrison vs. R-Truth - Could this finally be the night that the Taker drops the belt? His title reign has been completely forgettable and he took the belt off of a white hot new talent in CM Punk (who I had never been a fan of prior to his heel turn, by the way, so don't go calling me a mark). So, yeah, I want him to lose the title before Wrestlemania. His probable match with Shawn Michaels doesn't need a title. Title vs. Streak was nice two and three years ago, respectively, because the concept was fresh and he had opponents that needed to be champions, at the time. HBK doesn't; Taker doesn't; Let's get the belt off him, shall we? There is really only one guy that has a chance to win the belt, in my opinion, and that's Jericho. The Royal Rumble winning Edge is lying in wait for Jericho to become champion so that they can have their feud and Mania match. The question is how to get the belt off Taker. The answer is Shawn Michaels. HBK failing to appear on Raw and adding no further fuel to the fire that he might instead take on Triple H (despite having built a storyline with Taker for the better part of two months) makes me think we'll see HBK somehow cost Taker the title. Yet, that's coming from the guy who insisted that we'd see Orton vs. Cena and Edge vs. HHH last year all the way up until No Way Out. There are two possible outcomes to this match. 1) Taker retains. 2) Jericho wins thanks to HBK's help.

WWE Championship Elimination Chamber: Sheamus (c) vs. Triple H vs. Randy Orton vs. John Cena vs. Ted Dibiase vs. Kofi Kingston - Sheamus, Dibiase, and Kingston all make their EC match debuts, Orton attempts to win one for the first time in three tries, Cena will go for his second win, and Triple H will try to further his impressive EC match win/loss record. There are several intriguing storylines at play involving the superstars in this match. Orton and Dibiase are stepping up their budding feud and I'm not sure what direction it will ultimately take. Rumor had it that Dibiase would be the face, but Orton is the one getting the face reactions. Would they really turn their top heel into a babyface for a match against Ted Dibiase? Due to their impending Wrestlemania encounter, it's possible that one of them walks away with the title. Meanwhile, John Cena is engaging in a storyline involving Batista. The two of them are likely to wrestle in some capacity at Mania and, if it's a singles match, there's a chance that Cena becomes champion on Sunday to set up a major title match between two of the top stars of the current era. Triple H owns Wrestlemania title matches. Of the Wrestlemanias he's taken part in since 2002, he's been in a title match EVERY year. And then there's the champion, Sheamus. Many have called him a lame duck. I, myself, have clamored for him to drop the title. Many have also reversed course because he's gotten much better and gotten over. I, myself, also reversed course and have grown to support him as a fresh face in the main-event that has some obvious skills to go along with the obvious things he needs to work on. This is the most interesting match on the card, in my opinion.

Divas Title Tournament Final: Gail Kim vs. Maryse - Maryse is not only the most drop dead gorgeous woman in the game right now, but she's actually got a personality to go with her playmate looks. She's a damn good heel, with her cocky persona shining since her return from injury. Gail Kim is who she is...a very good women's wrestler. Women's wrestling on Raw, despite these two, has been a lackluster afterthought for several months, now. I could care less about this match or its winner. I haven't been given a reason to care.

Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre vs. Kane - I like Drew McIntyre. I've waited years for a pro-sports association to have a guy with the same last name as me (my real last name). Besides our Scottish ties, I think Drew is a very impressive new talent. He's got the psychology part of the game down part. His matches might not be flashy, but they are realistic. He's relatively charismatic and has shown signs of being a potentially better than average character that could ascend to main-event status. Kane will be a good enhancement victory for Drew, presumably. I don't think there's much doubt in who wins, here.

Edge vs. Batista (if it gets added to the card, as rumored) - They walk a fine line in booking this match, as I can see them giving Batista the win. Will that hurt the credibility of one half of the main-event at Wrestlemania? One could argue that. One thing I do like about it is that it gives Edge a good warm-up PPV match. He needs to get back out there and work the kinks out before headlining the year's biggest show.

Gary "Stinger" Smith: This is a two match card for me. No disrespect to anyone on the card, but this event is nothing but a showcase for the two Elimination Chamber matches that both have huge WrestleMania implications. The rest of the matches are time fillers. As such, I’ll reserve comments for all non-Chamber matches until Parting Shots with Dr. Chad. I’m only going to focus on the two Chamber matches here, because they’re the only reason to even consider purchasing this event.

Smackdown has a solid lineup this year and should thus have the match of the night. Chris Jericho and CM Punk should both be heavily featured and generally be big factors in the match. John Morrison needs a helluva rub here as well. Morrison is a guy who, while the fans cheer for him, has kind of floundered as a babyface. He has all the flashy moves that the fans like, but he has lacked the necessary wins as over the past few months. He needs to look strong here and I believe he ultimately will because he’s going to be in the ring with some great wrestlers who aren’t afraid of letting guys look strong against them. Rey Mysterio will of course be there to do some highspots and jump around, but frankly I hope both he and R-Truth get eliminated before anyone else.

Ideally, this match comes down to Jericho and Punk forming a brief alliance to take out John Morrison so that the two of them can focus on eliminating Undertaker. Of course heel alliances in these matches never work out, so naturally the two will come to blows before eliminating the Undertaker. That’s where I’m going to partially silent. I’m going to save my predictions until the discussion with Chad, but as wrestling fans you can probably see what’s going to happen next.

There was no mention of Shawn Michaels on this past Monday’s RAW. This tells me we will see Shawn Michaels this Sunday and I believe it’s a great chance that we’ll see him in this match. The question for many is going to be how. Does Shawn come down and take out R-Truth or John Morrison and lock himself in the Chamber pod (ala Edge)? Does Shawn show up from underneath the ring, or some other fashion, near the end of the match? Either way, unless WWE works the swerve, I think it is a pretty safe bet that we see Michaels get involved here and I’ll go ahead and say it; he’ll cost The Undertaker the World Championship. There’s just no reason to assume they won't face each other again at WrestleMania, and when they do, the match certainly doesn’t need a title stipulation to it because frankly the match is above a title.

The other Chamber match, and more than likely the one that goes on first, comes to us from Monday Night Raw. Sheamus is defending his championship against John Cena, Triple H and Randy Orton… oh, and Kofi Kingston and Ted DiBiase. This is an intriguing match, for a number of reasons. The main reason, RAW’s WrestleMania contribution seems like the one most up in the air. None of it is set in stone to use viewers, but RAW’s WrestleMania main-event could go a number of different ways. This Chamber match has a somewhat interesting side story surrounding it as well, that being the Orton, Legacy, Sheamus situation.

A couple of weeks ago, Jerry Lawler speculated that Cody Rhodes and Sheamus were somehow in cahoots. I’m not a fan of that possibility, but it creates intrigue for this match and the forthcoming Legacy split. Randy Orton has been a very good face reaction as of late, so there is a part of me that would not be surprised to see Legacy help Sheamus in some fashion. That’s a small part, more than likely they just implode and face each other in a Triple Threat at WrestleMania. Will the title be on the line? I really hope not, but I do want to see Ted DiBiase eliminate Randy Orton from this match. DiBiase has been booked to look weak; weak against Sheamus, weak against Orton, and weak against Cena. He needs to send a strong statement to Orton by cleanly eliminating him from the match. Logically, Ted would eat an RKO afterwards, allowing someone else to get the cheap elimination of DiBiase. The bad blood really needs to start pumping, because this one has been a very slow build with numerous teases.

Ultimately this match comes down to two people, Sheamus and Triple H. I think it’s obvious Cena and Batista will do battle at WrestleMania, probably in a tag match teaming with Bret and Vince respectably. So that takes Cena out of the equation, and that’s a good thing because I don’t want to see Cena as WWE Champion going into or coming out of another WrestleMania anytime soon. Kofi Kingston I don’t believe has any realistic shot of winning, this isn’t TNA and he isn’t The Pope. So it’ll come down to Sheamus and Triple H in what I feel will be a small prelude to WrestleMania. I’ll reserve my prediction until the next segment, but suffice to say that I am looking forward to the prospect of Sheamus and Triple H at WrestleMania 26 for the WWE Championship. I know some people will roll their eyes and moan about that, but ultimately I’m confident that it will be a very good match and likely a match that really puts Sheamus on the map as a legitimate star to his critics at the moment.

No Way Out has traditionally been a pretty good event, especially as build to WrestleMania, but also a throw away event. The name may have changed, but I do not see a reason to believe this event will be any different than past versions. We’re looking at a four announced matches here, but it should be a decent night of wrestling. Mind you, not decent enough to warrant spending $45, but decent nonetheless.

Stinger: The Elimination Chamber is just a day away Chad, and I'm not really feeling it. They've done a really bad job of enticing me to even consider ordering it.

Dr. Chad: Four matches does not an enticing PPV line-up make - no matter the two big gimmick matches. I'm not a fan of the February PPV in the first place and haven't bothered to view it since 2006...but this one doesn't offer much. However, it does have two intriguing matches for the respective world titles.

Stinger: I'm with you there. This event has traditionally, for the most part, been a throw away; this one even more so than usual. I am interested in both of the Chamber matches, probably RAW's the most due largely to Sheamus and the Triple H factor.

Dr. Chad: Yea, I understand the need to get a strong buyrate for the Feb. PPV, but why the unnecessary injury risk? This match is an injury waiting to happen...just because few injuries have happened doesn't mean there's not a strong chance someone could get injured every time. Anyhow, my question is: do they try and be unpredictable like last year and do something crazy off the wall that throws a wrench into the obvious Mania plans? Or do they go more conservative and do what we expect? Speaking of expectations - do you think Sheamus retains?

Stinger: I definitely agree about the unnecessary risk for injury heading into the biggest event of the year, no doubt. As for whether or not I think Sheamus retains... yeah, I think he retains it. And actually, I want him to retain the title. I'm pulling for Sheamus to go into WrestleMania as champion, and also to leave WrestleMania as champion. This is the big win Sheamus needs, and it doesn't need to be a cheap win. I certainly don't want to see Cody Rhodes help him, as the King keeps trying to plant in our minds. Who do you see winning this one?

Dr. Chad: Dr: How about that? We agree on something...I, too, see Sheamus retaining and oddly find myself wanting to see Sheamus retain. For starters, I think he's done a nice job as champion, both in his performances and his ability to get over. I also think that the rest of the card shapes up very nicely with him as champion and Triple H as his challenger - despite my gripes of Trips being in yet another title match and Sheamus being unproven at Mania. If Triple H will be involved in a title match, the only one that makes sense is against Sheamus. However, I do think there's an outside shot that Trips wins the title and defends against either HBK or Edge. Nonetheless, I'm picking Sheamus and will be rooting for him. Let's see Trips put someone over again and elevate them to true main-event status for years to come - because that's what a win against Trips means if you aren't Chris Benoit.

Stinger: Right. Sheamus absolutely needs to beat Triple H at WrestleMania. You know I've defended Trips in the past, but if he is the guy who takes the title off of Sheamus, while he is getting over, be it in the Chamber or at WrestleMania, then I'll officially be on the Triple H hate-wagon. Trips has a chance to really make a star here. It's like, does he want to be Ric Flair (who would put Sheamus over) or does he want to be Hulk Hogan (who would bury Sheamus). On the flip, I really wouldn't be too disappointed to see Trips/Michaels, but I would be if that match were for the title. I'd rather see Sheamus/Edge than those two compete for the title. Speaking of Michaels and titles, any chance Shawn takes John Morrison out of the Elimination Chamber on Smackdown's side?

Dr. Chad: I don't think so. I think that's what we're being led to believe by JoMo's injury angle. I think they want us to believe that they'll pull a repeat of last year and have a guy get taken out and replaced. I just don't see that happening. I want to see Taker vs. HBK II - they've done a great job building it up to make me want to see that - and I was, previously, all about Trips vs. HBK. So, I see HBK getting involved in the Chamber, but not being an actual participant. What do you think?

Stinger: No I don't think so either, although that does seem to be the consensus a lot fans have. I think Michaels gets involved to cost Taker the title, pissing him off enough to grant Michaels his rematch. But I don't think we'll see a repeat of what Edge did, and it really wouldn't even make sense this time around. I think Smackdown's Chamber is a little more predictable than RAW's. I'm going to pick Chris Jericho to win, following Shawn Michaels interference.

Dr. Chad: That's certainly what I'm hoping for and predicting, as well. The match I most want to see at Mania 26 is Edge vs. Jericho for the World title. In order for that to happen, I gotta get a Jericho win in the Chamber - but something just makes me skeptical of that...like I should've believe it until I see it booked and previewed on the WWE website. Nonetheless, that's the route that makes the most sense, at this point. Anyone predicting something else is seeing things that I'm not. Several are citing HBK vs. HHH as the reason we won't see Taker-HBK II, but that whole storyline with HBK is about finding a way to end the streak. That has nothing to do with Trips. They'd have to build several whole new storylines if HBK didn't wrestle Taker.

Stinger: Agreed across the board there. The match I wanted to see at WrestleMania was a triple threat unification match between Jericho (World Champ), Christian (ECW Champ) and Edge. Obviously that match can't happen now, so Jericho/Edge is the best way to go. I'm sure it will be the best actual wrestling match on the card. If this weren't the event before WrestleMania, I'd like to see the "injured" Morrison win the championship in the chamber. I don't think that will happen though, nor should it this year, but it would be a cool surprise.

Dr. Chad: Morrison has potential to be champion and I think this injury angle with him could build him up in the fans eyes as a tough guy and not just a high flyer with cool moves. So, speaking of the former IC champion, do you think there's any chance Kane wins the IC title from Drew McIntyre? If not, what do you see for the budding young star for Mania?

Stinger: No, I don't think Kane wins it. Since it seems unlikely that there will be a MITB match at Mania, I think Drew goes on to defend the title against Christian at Mania. And he'll probably lose it. With that said, I think Kane is doing some of his best work as of late, so I actually do believe this will be a pretty good match for both men. They need at least ten minutes, but I think Drew comes out looking strong. I still think Drew needs a valet though.

Dr. Chad: I agree on all points with the exception of the valet, but his real life fiancée (Tiffany) suddenly has no job...so maybe she can work with him. I think McIntyre has a bright future and will have some really stand out matches with Christian when/if they feud. His match w/ Kane should get some time on Sunday...there's only four matches announced, so they've got to fill that time with something. Anything you want to say about the Divas title match?

Stinger: I don't really care about the Divas match. Maryse is a fantastic character; I still think she can be the next Trish Stratus. I'll pick her to win it. Who do you like in this match?

Dr. Chad: I like Maryse as well. She's the best character in the division. Well, we agreed a lot tonight. You have anything further to add about this PPV?

Stinger: Yeah, I don't think Batista-Edge will happen, as that seems like a match they would advertise. I definitely wouldn't be surprised to see ShowMiz get a match, but I think there's a 90% we see a throw away Matt Hardy/Khali vs. Hart Dynasty match. No way they just air four matches, because you know the divas match won't last longer than six minutes.

Dr. Chad: Yeah, ShowMiz vs. MVP/Henry was at least set-up to a point. We could see another random US title match between Miz and MVP. They've got unfinished business. So, here's hoping for logical finishes and good post-PPV health for all involved so that we can gear up for the biggest PPV of the year...which is shaping up to be very good (on paper) if we've predicted these outcomes correctly.

Stinger: Agreed. I'll end by saying that I'll be a pissed off Stinger if Sheamus loses the title.

Dr. Chad: I'll be right there with you on the Trips-hater wagon if the Nose takes the belt from him.

Elimination Chamber airs this Sunday, LIVE on Pay-Per-View. We make no predictions on un-announced matches that may be added following the posting of this preview, but in the event that additional matches are added, then you can safely assume that we would have predicted whoever ends up winning the match. Those of you who are planning on ordering Elimination Chamber, we wish you luck that you get a good show and your money's worth. Until next time, for Dr. Chad Matthews, I’m the Stinger and this has been Sports Entertainment 360.

Hey man your clock won't flush!!!
To be fair, this was possibly one of the worst PPV's of the 2009/10 year.
